An easy-to-understand explanation and overview of the Socratic method and its use in our modern-day discourse.

Summary

To lay the foundation for the use of the Socratic method, Farnsworth starts with the historical background. We look at the lives of Socrates, Plato, and other philosophers to understand the time and place where this method came from. Throughout the book, we can see the impact Socrates had on his contemporary philosophers and those who followed.

Using the writings of Plato, we dissect the different elements of the Socratic method and look at its desired results. Not only that, but we see the tightrope one has to dance to keep these dialogues going without offending the interlocutor. This can lead to the extent where a candid conversation is no longer possible. Since the goal of these conversations is the truth, we need to make sure that all participants feel compelled and safe to speak their minds.

The Socratic Method has us look at other philosophies, such as Stoicism and Skepticism, to see how others adopted the ideas of this wise man. Understanding the differences in how it is used can lead to a better grasp of how powerful it was. Once we’ve seen all the different parts of the Socratic Method, Farnsworth brings it to the present. To improve our current dialogue, he gives us a set of rules that can provide us with the guidelines to live better together.

Review

Ward Farnsworth makes an excellent attempt at keeping it practical and easy to understand. Without falling into the trap of becoming too academic, the confidence in his writing makes it clear that he possesses the knowledge. He has an obvious objective, which helps him steer the book in a specific direction. He presents the Socratic method in a well-thought-through structure that directly supports his goal.

There are enough recommendations for those who wish to continue to read about the Socratic method. Farnsworth acknowledges that there is still a lot of debate going on about many of the points discussed in the book. This adds credibility to the text and his expertise. By not being held up by this, he makes this book accessible to a wide audience. For example, this approach serves both those interested in philosophy and those eager to improve their discourse.

Recommendation

The Socratic Method is a must-read book in a day and age where civil discourse is often lost. The 12 rules found at the end seem so obvious that it is disappointing that we need these reminders. For someone like me, who has been interested in Stoicism, this book provides a valuable background into that philosophy. Since Socrates is the ideal wise man to the Stoics, having a better understanding of his life and method gives deeper insights into Stoic philosophy.

Having said that, this is a book that should be on the shelf in everyone’s home. The instructions on how to have a respectful conversation are vital. They aim to find the truth that has long been missing. In our times of high-speed communication, we can use more candor and humility. More people need to remind themselves of what Socrates told himself back then when he said that he knew nothing.

Final thoughts

This easy-to-read and understand book by Ward Farnsworth gives the reader an excellent insight into the Socratic method and aims to elevate our modern-day discourse. Ward Farnsworth guides us into the minds of Socrates, Plato, and the like. You can find his book on Amazon here.
