Stoic Coaching: Reduce Anxiety, Find Direction, and Build Resilience
One-on-One Sessions with Benny Voncken
Who Comes to Stoic Coaching
Stoic coaching attracts people at different moments in their lives. Some are in a period of external change: a career shift, a relationship ending, a new chapter they did not choose. Others are in a quieter internal struggle, where nothing is visibly wrong but something no longer fits. Some are in genuine crisis and need a steadier ground to stand on. And some cannot fully name what is happening yet; they only know that something is off and that the usual ways of dealing with it are not working.
What they share is a sense that the way they have been responding to their life is not quite working, and a recognition that something needs to shift.
If any of the following sounds familiar, this work is likely relevant to you if you:
- lose your temper more than you want to, especially with the people you care about
- feel pulled between what others expect of you and what you actually value
- overthink decisions until the moment to act has passed
- have tried therapy, found it useful up to a point, and are looking for something more practical and direct
- carry a persistent sense that something is off, but you cannot locate or name it
- want to build a steadier inner life, not just manage symptoms
Stoic coaching is not therapy and it is not self-help. It is a sustained, practical engagement with your own thinking, grounded in one of the oldest and most tested philosophical traditions in the world.
What is Stoic Coaching?

Stoic coaching uses the philosophy of Stoicism as a practical framework for working through the real challenges of your life. You do not need to become a Stoic. The philosophy is the tool. You are the focus.
Stoicism is not a personality type or a call to suppress your emotions. It is a practical philosophy developed over two thousand years by ordinary people navigating real pressure: grief, anger, conflict, failure, and responsibility. Its goal is to help you understand what you can and cannot control, question the stories you tell yourself before they drive your behaviour, and act with more steadiness and intention in the moments that matter.
Many of its core principles also underpin modern therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which is one reason the work tends to feel both grounded and immediately applicable.
Epictetus opens the Enchiridion with the same distinction this coaching is built on: “Some things are up to us, and some are not up to us” (Epictetus, Enchiridion, 1). Nearly two thousand years later, that single line still does most of the practical work.

About Benny
I have been practicing Stoic philosophy daily for close to a decade. During this time, I've built Via Stoica because I wanted a platform that treated the philosophy as a living practice, not a content category.
Besides this, I have spoken at Stoicon, run Stoic walks across Europe, and discussed Stoicism directly with leading Stoic scholars, including Massimo Pigliucci, Margaret Graver, Donald Robertson, and John Sellars. I host The Via Stoica Podcast, where I work through Stoic teachings drawn from daily practice. I have also been sober for six years, and much of what I understand about building a steadier inner life comes from having had to build one.
My approach is direct, structured, and unhurried. I do not offer reassurance or easy answers. I offer honest engagement with what is actually happening for you and practical tools to respond to it differently.
How Stoic Coaching Works
The process starts with a free thirty-minute consultation. We talk about what is bringing you here, what you have already tried, and where you feel most stuck. You leave with a clearer picture of whether Stoic coaching is the right fit for your situation. There is no obligation and no pressure.
If we decide to work together, all sessions are held online via video call. Each session runs fifty minutes. Between sessions, I give you a short practical exercise drawn from the Stoic tradition and adapted to your specific situation. You can explore some of these exercises in the Epictetus Discourses series on this site.
My coaching is not about following a system blindly. It is about helping you build your own personal philosophy of life, grounded in what actually works for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know anything about Stoicism to start?
No. I cover what is relevant as we go. You do not need to have read anything in advance. If you want to explore the basics before we talk, this page is a good place to start.
What if I am not sure what I want to work on?
That is more common than you might think. Many people arrive with a general sense that something is off but no clear name for it. The consultation is the right place to start. You do not need to have your situation figured out before we talk. Part of what the coaching does is help you locate what you have not been able to articulate yet.
Is this therapy?
No. Coaching and therapy are different things. Therapy works with the past and with clinical conditions. Coaching works with the present and with how you want to operate going forward. I do not diagnose or treat psychological conditions. If your situation requires therapeutic support, I will say so clearly and can help you find the right direction.
Is Stoic coaching only for people interested in philosophy?
No. Most clients come to the work for practical reasons, anger, relationships, stress, identity, decision-making. The philosophy is a tool, not a subject. You do not need to be interested in Stoicism to benefit from it.
Can I work with Benny if I am not based in Europe?
Yes. All sessions are online. Clients are based across Europe, North America, and beyond.
What happens in the free consultation?
We talk for thirty minutes. You tell me what is bringing you here. I ask questions, listen carefully, and give you my honest assessment of whether and how coaching can help. There is no sales pitch and no pressure to sign up.
How long does coaching typically last?
Most clients work with me for three to six months. Some continue longer. The pace is determined by what you are working through, not by a fixed programme.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
The consultation is a straightforward conversation. You talk about what you are dealing with. I listen and give you my honest view of whether I can help and how. If Stoic coaching is not the right fit, I will tell you that too.
